Go Away - A Poem About Internet Addiction
88I'm Thinking - Go Away
My husband comes in to tell me about his morning fishing expedition. In my mind, I'm screaming, "Be quiet, go away!"
But I smile politely and close the lid to my laptop so that it seems my attention is on him. All the while, I'm thinking, "I wonder if I have a good photograph to go with my hub? I wonder if I can put together another photo gallery hub before the contest ends?— Now go away!"
Gemini would like to write a Hub
I Love My Cat, but ...Go Away!
The cat, my beloved Gemini of the famous Psychic Cat hub,and the one who wrote the well known hub, 10 Ways to Pamper Your Cat, comes to me and jumps into my lap only to find that there’s already an occupant – my laptop computer – just where he likes to take his nap. He tries so hard to find a spot on my keyboard, only to be rudely removed. Oh, what am I coming to? Poor kitty— Now go away!
I'm Checking the Internet - Go Away!
I open my laptop shortly after I open my eyes. I find myself trying to hide my internet addiction from my family as I sneak looks at my stats and comments and followers’ hubs when hubby is in the bathroom or goes out to get the mail. I bake cookies for the grandchildren, and have my computer on the counter so that I can check it between batches of cookies. The oven timer goes off. Go Away!
Late at night is the best time, for the TV is off and my husband goes to bed. The cat finally decides to curl up next to me instead of on my keyboard. I can edit my photos and work on my next masterpiece in the quiet. I see from the comments that pop up in my email and from the new hubs that are published in the middle of the night that I am not alone. In the wee hours before dawn, I find myself dozing over my computer. Sleep, go away!
Addicted to the Internet - And It Doesn't Go Away!
That is the life of an addict, a HubPages addict, an internet addict. We get twitchy with separation anxiety when we are away from our computers. If we own one of those delightful devices that can browse the internet wherever we are, we will sneak peeks while we're driving or shopping or eating lunch with a friend or lying on the beach. It’s a sickness! And it doesn’t go away!
So this is the inspiration for my poem. Like it or not, you may identify with it!

Go Away, Let Me Write
Too busy to cook,
I don’t have the time.
Won’t you fix dinner
Sweet hubby of mine?
I don’t clean house,
Or vacuum the floor.
I don’t have the time,
For that little chore.
The clothes pile high,
Not folded or pressed.
A problem I know,
To get nicely dressed.
Since I wear my sweats,
From morning to night.
I don’t really care,
If I look a fright.
The manicure’s gone,
My hair, what a wreck!
I’ve only got time to
Research and spell check.
Of course, I get paid!
See my earnings grow.
My clickers, they click,
My auctions, they flow.
Just Wednesday I made,
A buck twenty-nine.
That’s six bucks since April,
That I’ve made online.
I’ll win that contest!
Get comments galore!
I’ll meet the challenge,
To raise my Hub score.
Shut off the TV,
And please go away.
Leave me to create,
The hub of the day!

I like the poem.. Its very funny but for some of us, this is really true. lol. I really love it. voted up.:)
I've got this ailment! Except sub an attention-seeking toddler and an active newborn for your cat! It's funny because my hubby is addicted to internet surfing when he has free time...now that I've found hubpages and started blogging, the tables are turned! (This written on my smartphone, while holding the baby, and oohing and aahing over every 'treasure' the toddler brings me to inspect).
I can definitely relate to this affliction, since I've got it. Voting this Up and Interesting.
LOL Stephanie.. I also try hard... very hard.. :) Lets wish ourselves luck... ;) Have a lovely day !!
Stephanie, Uh what can we do? we so love our laptops and our hubs... I wish they would all go away too... LoL this is funny but I can so relate to this. :) Love it :)
Very clever! I have a job in front of the computer and the amount of self control I need to keep from living on the hub site is godly!
Interesting!
I think it's a form of escapism. Internet addicts who spend all their time forming pseudo-relationships miss teh whole real deal and are cheating themselves.
Internet has many positives, but addiction is addiction and it's almost always a way for unhappy people to put off doing the internal self-work that will make them happier.
I wish you luck with your internet addiction. There is something better out there. Your husband and any children deserve better, even pets and strangers, than an empty shell creating a fantasy life for herself on the computer.
Hi Stephanie, about cats, they sure can interfere with an internet addiction!lol You gotta love them. I've found that RVing with a cat can be tricky sometimes when most folks at RV Parks have little ankle biting dawgs! Thanks for the poem, enjoyed it and sooo true!
Very cute, Sounds just like my house. My hubby finally had to fix my desk to make room for my cat so he would stop laying on my keyboard. We rearranged and pushed the montior back and lefted it up a little. Now my cat can lay between the key board and the monitor.
Hi Stephanie, I just read the first paragraph to my husband who said, 'Does this ring any bells'??
A wonderful funny hub and amazing poem, Loved it and voted up!
Thank you.. nice poem and beautifully composed. keep writing.voted up!
Dear Steph ~ I forgot to tell you where to find your new link. Search "Debby Bruck Twitter Addiction" on Google. Blessings, Debby
I know the feeling. I don't push my Amy away, but I feel like I am not around her enough. Online writing takes up a lot of time!
Dear Steph ~ I will vote this one "Hub of the Day" on Hubpages and Internet addiction. I've been writing about this subject for 3 years now. It might even be worse than caffeine addiction. So, please go away, I've got to go link this hub on one of mine right now! Blessings, Debby
Looks like we all get the same treatment at home. Sometimes it is hard to focus on the mundane daily tasks when you feel you have something more important to do on the net. What did we ever do with our time before cyberspace?
Great piece and so true.
Forgive me...I've been writing and working and not reading other hubs. So glad to focus on you this afternoon and 'catch up'.
This is a funny and very true situation. I've neglected my sleep when I'm on a writing roll. My nephew doesn't mind that I don't pay attention to him...he's a teen. But, poor Beauty our dog-well, she tries to jump on my lap and looks forlorn when I push her back down.
I hear you-addiction is the word, hee hee. It is a dominoe affect, the more you engage the more you get hooked! I love your poem, LOL It's perfect.
You're amazing! Great poem, voting up I love it. I an't wait to read more from you in the future.
Ohhhh Steph - I'm only a few steps shy of "guilty" regarding this, but I can already identify with it.
Between the reading, more reading, writing, more reading, editing, editing, reading ....
There are never enough hours in the day to keep up with it!
And, sadly, I DO have a phone that allows me net access from where ever I am, and I USE it, lol!!
Oh Stephanie, you are an honest soul! I think we all have been there for sure, but other things have to pull me away, and my eyes also seem to appreciate a break from the computer.
Why does time fly by when on the computer? I think that is part of it, and its not that different with kids and their games I think sometimes. Others can sense it better than they seem to. I have found for me, timers are great! I don't like feeling "guilty" for too much time on the computer, and this makes me feel better and seeing many other things getting accomplished as well, helps it to all go more smoothly. Now in contest times, oh my...that CAN be a crazy time! One thing is for sure, the knowing in advance that Hubpages now gives (last few times I think?) is a GREAT help in this regard. This last time, I wanted to do more, but I just said you know...its fine. I just do my best.
Thanks so much for sharing, love your entries and having you as a friend on hubpages. :)
This is hysterical and probably true for many of us. I am having trouble keeping up lately due to taking care of other people but I want to have time to read every hub. Happy Thanksgiving!
Very interesting, Stephanie! I understand how restless it can sometimes feel when one is not able to check what's the latest update online, and my friends, and also my friend's parents all have lamented about how addictive the internet is. But I always keep my internet-urge in check and make certain that it is not the internet that is running my life.
Before I forget to mention, my mum likes this poem too.
Hysterical! Im going to print this out and hand it to all the members of my household so maybe they can understand just what Im going through...its so hard to explain. Of course I love them but in the midst of typing this one comment I had to let the dog out, open a juice for my daughter, listen to my husband explain why he brought work home, plunge the toilet for the other daughter and answer a call for the third child...and now its 45 minutes later. Voted up!
Love it!! :)
We must be identical twons parted at birth.
All My Best,
JT
"I know that my fate is writ of course
The cat and the hubby will sue for divorce!"
I had a laugh over this Stephanie, especially the poem. Imagine if you were both "hubnuts!"
ha ha. This was great. I read this one word for word. Sometimes I have a hard time with poetry. You have to read them a few times to decipher them. I could totally relate to this. My cat likes to get in the way too, and when my boyfriend came home I took time out to hear about his day hunting. We do need to take time away for other things but I would rather be an internet addict than an addict. Well, besides a coffee addict. Can't stop that. My daughter got in the way today. She's been wanting to use the computer as her brother borrowed hers. We took some time to look at Twilight images on Google images. Have you tried Google Keywords Tool yet? That is great. I just discovered it today and am going to start using it for all my titles. It comes up with all kinds of good related keywords that you could use and has all the stats as to how many people in the world are using them. Up until yesterday all my keywords were all over the place, but thanks to izzy I learned how to refine them. Up until yesterday I was getting only a ten to twenty cent increase each day. Today it was almost a seventy cent increase. Still not much but better than before.
Uh-huh! I find myself getting irritated with constant interruptions to tend to ... well, life!
Hubby likes to surf as well, and from his computer comments and "argues" with people on the Yahoo news comments pages. The problem being, he is "spelling challenged," and I am interrupted about every 5th word I type.. "how to you spell.....???"
Yeah. Spoken well for all of us! The middle of the night is, indeed, the only interruption-free time zone.
Voted up across the board.
This is truly great. I am laughing the whole way through it, knowing it describes me perfectly. Definitely worth hub of the day! Voted up across the board.
That was great, I've only been here a few weeks but can feel the pull of the computer, just like you!! I'm trying to balance it with the rest of my life though, I don't want to walk around with the computer taped to my face! very insightful!
Oh that's so funny and much too true! Yeah, I was one of those up in the wee hours last night creating just one more hub for the contest!
And thank goodness I don't have one of those phones that allow me to check the internet when I'm at my beloved beaches- the place I go to relax and....uh-oh....take pictures for my next hub! (smile).
I could so relate to these verses! Voted up across the board and good luck in the contest. There has surely been many worthy entries.
I so relate to this. My husband will walk in and say to me, "I am home, can you shut your laptop and pay attention to me?" The other day he told me he thought that maybe I loved the laptop more than him..lol
Loved your poem it sure hit home :)
