Health Benefits to Drinking Coffee

Coffee lovers unite! Forget the dark days when you were bombarded with negative vibes about drinking coffee.

Pros and cons of drinking coffee come up regularly in conversations and in the news. We coffee lovers don’t want to hear the bad stuff, and now it seems that there is more good news for coffee drinkers than the bad. New research has confirmed with we coffee drinkers have known forever… that there are many health benefits to drinking coffee! Now pour a cup of coffee and inhale that wonderful aroma while you read on, for there are at least 20 good reasons to keep drinking the coffee that you love.

Reasons to Drink Coffee

First of all, coffee is good for the heart and soul:

1. Coffee tastes great! Drink coffee because you like it – a LOT!

2. Coffee is comforting. It makes me feel better when I’m down. In fact, a study by Alberto Ascherio of Harvard School of Public Health of 50.000 women who drink caffeinated coffee found that women who drank four or more cups of coffee daily have a 20% lower risk of developing depression than women who do not drink caffeinated coffee. (Sept. 27, 2011)

3. Coffee provides an energy boost.

4. A hot cup of coffee warms you up when you’re cold. We don’t need science to tell us that a hot cup of coffee warms us up on a cold day!

5. Coffee and cookies are a match made in heaven!

6. Coffee is the perfect accompaniment to donuts. What’s a donut without a cup of java?

7. Coffee goes well with pie. Any kind of pie is just better with a hot cup of coffee!

8. Coffee improves mood and concentration. Really!

9. Coffee is perfect with chocolate. Coffee and chocolate…mmm!

10. Coffee is sociable. It’s friendly to drink a cup of coffee with a friend.

11. Coffee is welcoming. It’s a nice way to welcome people into your home.

12. Coffee smells wonderful! The smell of fresh coffee is a wonderful way to wake up in the morning. It really does make you want to get out of bed and have that first heavenly cup! (No, I don’t work for Maxwell House!)

13. Coffee is low in calories. A cup of coffee without milk or suger has only 2 calories. Add milk and sugar, and coffee has only 64 calories per 8 oz. cup.

Health Benefits to Drinking Coffee

Then there are the health benefits associated with drinking 2-4 8oz cups of coffee a day. I am not making this up - these benefits are from medical and scientific studies that have been analyzed by the Harvard School of Public Health.

Facts about Coffee Drinking

  • Caffeine is America’s favorite drug.
  • More than 50% of Americans drink coffee.
  • After oil, coffee is the second most valuable commodity in the world.
  • Americans drink more than 530 million cups of coffee a day.
  • Archaeologists say that man has been brewing caffeine beverages since the Stone Age.
  • It takes about a week of drinking coffee for your brain to “need” a caffeine fix and to become a caffeine addict.
  • Coffee made in a drip coffee pot has almost twice the caffeine as coffee brewed in a percolator.
  • Caffeine removed from coffee to make decaf is sold to soda companies to add to soft drinks – your kids could be drinking more caffeine than you are!
  • Coffee is a diuretic.

  • Coffee stimulates the muscles in your digestive tract to contract.

  • Coffee grows on trees that may reach 30 ft. high.

  • Coffee only grows in the “Bean Belt” the area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

  • Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that grows coffee.

  • Coffee was originally mixed with fat and eaten rather than brewed into a beverage.

  • In the U.S., September 29th is National Coffee Day!

Coffee Reduces Risk of Some Diseases

14. Coffee protects against diabetes. According to Frank Hu, MD, MPH, PhD, nutrition and epidemiology professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, studies have shown that people who drink six or seven cups of coffee have a 35% less chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Scientists think that the antioxidant compounds in coffee boosts the cell’s sensitivity to insulin and help regulate blood sugar. It has not been determined if decaf is better than caffeinated coffee.

15. Reduced risk of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Drinking between 3-5 cups of coffee daily is linked to reduced the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. It seems that the antioxidants in coffee help prevent damage to brain cells and boosts effects of neurotransmitters. A study in Finland and Sweden followed 1,400 people over the course of 20 years and found a 65% lower incidence of Alzheimer’s and dementia in people who drank 3-5 cups of coffee daily.

16. Caffeine improves memory in seniors. Researchers at the University of Arizona and UCLA research group found that caffeine improves and repairs memory for elderly women.

17. Lower risk of Parkinson’s Disease. The Harvard School of Public Health reported that higher intake of coffee is definitely associated with lower risk of Parkinson’s disease.

18. Coffee makes you more aware and alert. Coffee stimulates the production of cortisone and adrenaline preparing the body for fight or flight response and heightening the senses.

19. Lower risk of brain cancer. Some studies have also noted that when coffee consumption rises, certain kinds of brain cancer drop.

20. Decreased incidence of stroke. The long-term Nurses' Health Study showed that moderate intake of coffee decreases incidence of stroke by 20%.

21. Lower incidence of liver disease. Surprise! The more coffee people drink, the lower their incidence of liver diseases. An analysis of data from nine studies found that for every 2 cup daily increase of coffee, there was a 43% lower risk of liver cancer.

And other studies have found these additional benefits:

22. Lower risk of prostate cancer. New research at the Harvard School of Public Health shows that men who drink coffee have a 20% lower risk of developing prostate cancer. Those who drink six or more cups each day reduce their risk of prostate cancer by 60% compared to non-coffee drinkers. (published by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute).

23. Lower risk of basal cell carcinoma. At a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Boston in 2011, data was presented that showed a 20% lower risk of basal cell carcinoma in women who drank more than three cups of caffeinated coffee a day. Reduced risk was less for men, but still 9%. (There was no evidence of lower risk for those who drank decaffinated coffee or for other kinds of skin cancer.)

24. Coffee reduces post-exercise muscle pain. Two cups of coffee after a workout can reduce post exercise muscle pain by 48%. From the Journal of Pain, March 2007

Some health risks

There are a few health risks for caffeinated coffee drinkers that have no solution, and to be fair I will present them here.

  • Too much coffee can result in faster loss of calcium.
  • Too much caffeine can raise blood pressure and increase risk of stroke and heart attack, says Dr. Jim Lane, a researcher at the Duke University Medical School. (2002) This is in contradiction to the findings of the Harvard study mentioned above.

The Cons of Drinking Coffee

... And a Solution!

Of course there are the cons of coffee drinking, but coffee lovers, take heart! Here are the solutions to some of the negative things you’ve heard about coffee:

  • A sensitivity to caffeine can cause irritability and jitters.
Solution: Drink coffee every day. This will build up a tolerance for caffeine and those jittery effects will go away.
  • Coffee is addictive. People who drink coffee every day will very likely get headaches if they are deprived of coffee.
    Solution:
Don’t deprive yourself! Go ahead and have your coffee every day!
  • Coffee can keep you awake if you drink it too close to bedtime.
    Solution:
It takes about 6 hours for caffeine to clear your system, so if you have sleep problems, don’t drink coffee past late afternoon.
  • Unfiltered coffee can increase LDL. Unfiltered coffee like French press, or Turkish coffee, contains higher levels of compounds that can increase LDL (bad cholesterol).
Solution: Drink filtered coffee, like coffee made in a drip coffee maker. It is healthier!

Are you a coffee drinker?

How many cups of coffee do you drink each day?

  • I don't drink coffee
  • 2-3 cups of coffee each day
  • 4-6 cups of coffee each day
  • 6 or more
  • I drink it all day long - couldn't begin to count my coffee intake!

I'll Keep on Drinking Coffee

.

Although I never even considered giving up coffee, now that I know the health benefits of drinking coffee, I have reason to enjoy my java even more! How about you? Are you a coffee drinker? Have you ever considered giving up your coffee? I haven't!

Rebeccamealey - As a long time coffee addict, I too was pleased to see that there are many benefits to drinking coffee. Many people find that coffee will keep them awake - enjoying it early in the day is a good solution.

rebeccamealey 47 hours ago

I love coffee, I am certainly glad that research proves it healthy for you. I can't drink it in the afternoons, though. It interferes with my sleep!

KDuBarry03 2 days ago

Oh yes, It is a lot of coffee and caffeine; however, I have been reading much on coffee, such as this Hub, and I found really no negatives about it! Perhaps I just have a very high tolerance for caffeine!

Stephanie Henkel 2 days ago

KDuBarry03 - 80oz. a day is a lot of coffee! I'm glad that you have no negative effects from it. Although I don't drink as much coffee as I used to, there was a time when I would have run you a close second. I've always enjoyed my caffeine, and still do! Thanks for the comments, KD!

KDuBarry03 2 days ago

I am so happy to have read this. I drink about 80oz of coffee a day and I have to tell you: I've been feeling much healthier. A lot of my friends say I drink too much because of the caffeine in it; however, there's really no negative, that I see here, to support their claims. Thank you for such a useful hub!

Hi Denise,

Really? You just started drinking coffee? Well, better late than never! :) It's funny, when I was pregnant was the only time in my life I couldn't drink coffee. No wonder I was crabby when I was pregnant!

I'm all for reasons #5,6,7, and 9, hahaha. By the looks of the responses to this hub you really hit the target with this subject. Great hub, Stephie! Thanks so much for sharing such useful info.

I NEVER drank coffee until this midnight shift job. (oops, I lied-I drank 3 sips from my husband's thermos it smelled sooo good, back in 1975...three days later I found out I was pregnant! LOL) Voted up, Up, UP! (kind of like what that coffee does to me during the early morning hours, hee hee).

mbyL - It is true that one can become addicted to coffee and there are side effects to quitting caffeine suddenly. Most people who love coffee would have to have very strong reasons for giving it up as it becomes part of a lifestyle. Thanks for your comment and for sharing!

Stephanie Henkel 2 months ago

susanm23b - I was pleased to find that coffee has so much going for it, too! This is one of life's pleasures that I would have a difficult time giving up. Thanks so much for you comments!

I really enjoyed your hub, Stephanie! It's so nice to read good things about something I love. I do love coffee. I think that really good coffee is truly one of life's great pleasures. Agreed--coffee and chocolate--yum! I never knew that about the French press and LDL. I really like the flavor of French press coffee best of all but usually drink filtered. Voted up!

mbyL 2 months ago

There are many good reasons listed. Nonetheless, drinking it for a long period (like years) you get addicted to it and if you want to quit it is as hard as quitting any other addiction. So that would be a drawback for it, but regardless this the hub is very good!

Useful Voted up and SHARED!

Marpi - Like most coffee drinkers, I agree that coffee in the morning is a necessity. It's not a placebo effect as the coffee stimulates production of cortisone and adrenaline making you more alert. I too get a headache if I don't have coffee every day...and I probably give those around me a headache too! :) thanks for stopping by to comment!

Marpi 2 months ago

I like coffee especially in the morning because I believe it helps me wake up, eventhough it appears it's all a placebo effect. Still, I get a headache if I don't drink it. And I switched to pure coffee, without milk, which is far more easier for my digestive system!

Wonderful and very positive. Way to affirm what we already know to be good - I dislike folks who are forever seeking to find something negative in something we all know to be wonderful.

Plus, without coffee....I want to blow up the planet Earth.

Sally's Trove - I'm sure that one of the reasons that I love coffee is because is has always been a part of my life, too. Coffee was always part of celebrations and special occasions as well as part of the comfort of sad times. Thanks so much for your lovely and insightful comment!

I especially like your first 12 reasons for drinking coffee. Like many, I grew up with the smell of coffee brewing in the kitchen and have a hard time imagining that aroma not being there in the morning or not being there when an important family conversation takes place, or not being there at the end of a special Sunday dinner...Coffee is woven into the fabric of my life and I don't think life would be as strong or rich without it. Wonderful Hub full of excellent, well-researched information. Off now to get my third cup of the day. Voted up, useful, interesting, and awesome. :)

I can't make myself drink coffee. I tried in college since most of my friends were essentially addicts but I never liked the taste. I also can't handle caffeine so while I could drink decaf, it's just not my thing. I wish I could get the benefits without tasting it. But this hub is very interesting. I didn't know it helped lower the risk for all of these diseases. Great hub!

brianlokker - We seem to have the same vice! :) I'm not sure it's quite a virture, but it is definitely an addiction with a bright side. Thanks for stopping by to read!

MP50 - I've never heard of that particular reason for looking forward to dialysis, but I'm glad that having your coffee makes it easier to bear. Thanks for the vote and the share!

Stephanie Henkel 3 months ago

J.S. Matthew - It sounds like you really enjoy your coffee - we have that in common! Thanks for the comments, votes and the share!

Very informative hub. I've always said that my coffee habit is my only vice (pretty boring, eh?). Now I can claim it as a virtue!

MP50 3 months ago

I am a hemodialysis patient 4 days a week, I drink 2-3 cups of coffee on every dialysis treatment. The coffee can be taken out of my body while i'm on the dialysis machine, although I do not drink any coffee on my days off dialysis.

The coffee does make me feel good and yes I am an addict, I look foreward to my dialysis treatments just for the coffee lol....A good mug of Zoega's Swedish coffee is the best. :-D Voted up and SHARED.

Awesome! Now I feel no guilt! What an awesome Hub. You have laid out the many benefits of coffee and for that I thank you! I am an avid coffee drinker and I drink 2-4 cups a day. I like my coffee strong but sweet, with real creamer! Thanks for sharing! Voted up and SHARING!

Robie2 - I know that whenever I've thought about giving up coffee, I just banish the thought! The only time I've ever been off coffee is during pregnancy when, for some reason, I couldn't tolerate the taste. But how heavenly was that first cup of coffee after the baby!

Glad you enjoyed the hub and the link to the Perfect Rhubarb Pie!

Stephanie Henkel 3 months ago

sen.sush23 - I think that in the case of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's that caffeine is responsible for the good effects. In other cases, some of the other properties in coffee combine with caffeine to lower risk of certain diseases.

sen.sush23 3 months ago

Very informative Hub, I did not know of these positive effects of coffee in Alzheimer and Parkinson's and cancer etc. It is probably true of all caffeinated drinks? I love a strong brew of filter coffee, with sugar and light milk- but tea is my first love. Voted up and interesting.

Good bad or indifferent, I love coffee, particularly that first cup in the morning. I tried to give it up years ago and the headache and fatigue were so awful I just made myself another cup of coffee and decided to just be glad it was coffee not heroin I am addicted to. Thanks for giving me all these wonderful facts about coffee and a fabulous recipe for Rhubarb pie as well--just awesome!

Eric Newland - Preexisting risk factors could enter into it. I was also confused by the contradicting studies, but I believe that the Harvard study is more recent and may have included more people in the study. As with any health issue, people need to consult their doctors with their individual concerns.

Eric Newland 3 months ago

Yes! Validation at last!

I'm wondering if preexisting risk factors had something to do with those stroke studies. Maybe if you've got existing vascular or clot problems maybe the caffeine aggravates it, but if you don't then coffee's other benefits help prevent you from developing them to begin with?

ThePracticalMommy - Mmmm...chocolate in your coffee sounds yummy! I know that the caffeine has a little different effect on different people. Glad to hear you've found the perfect dose! Thanks for the vote and share!

Aya Katz - It's true that the benefits of drinking coffee were not all previously known. It seems that so many things we enjoy are bad for us that it's good to know coffee has it's good points.

Stephanie Henkel 3 months ago

RTalloni - You are definitely right about that! Even in the days when coffee was though to be unhealthy, I wouldn't have given it up! I don't think I could survive on one cup a day... Thanks for stopping by. Sorry you couldn't vote - I never thought about people who stop at one cup! :)

Stephanie Henkel 3 months ago

Tammyswalow - You're my kind of gal! I love my coffee and could easily drink the whole pot by myself if I didn't have to share with hubby. In fact, we sometimes have another pot brewing in the late afternoon...

Stephanie Henkel 3 months ago

Kathleen Kerswig - I do feel sorry for tea drinkers sometimes when they are surrounded by coffee drinkers! :) There are some benefits to drinking tea also... but do enjoy a cup of coffee with your friends and coworkers now and then.

Kathleen Kerswig 3 months ago

I sometimes attend meetings that serve only coffee. I would consider myself a tea drinker, but I find myself drinking the coffee to be sociable, as you mentioned here. I didn't realize all of the perks to drinking coffee. Thanks for these interesting facts. I may still choose tea if I have the option, but I will definitely enjoy my coffee a little bit more now. :)

tammyswallow 3 months ago

This hub is great news for me. I have a pot a day habit. I can't function without it. I am glad to here that there are benefits to drinking it. Thanks for this hub. I don't plan on depriving myself anytime soon.

RTalloni 3 months ago

It's a good thing it's good for us for not many of us would give it up! :) Viva September 29th! Couldn't vote because I drink 1 cup a day, but I see that I could increase that amount… :) Thanks!

Aya Katz 3 months ago

Thanks for listing all these many benefits of drinking coffee. Coffee has been much maligned.

ThePracticalMommy 3 months ago

I completely agree with #9--I love adding chocolate to my coffee! I'm one of those people who needs coffee on a daily basis, but not too much. Without it, I develop a headache. With too much, I develop a headache. As long as I stick to my two cups a day, I'm perfectly okay! :)

Great hub! Voted up and shared.

SanneL - Haha...in my house, no one talks to me until I've had at least two cups of coffee! Glad you like the picture - the cup is one of my favorites, although much too small for my regular morning brew! Thanks for stopping by to read and rate!

Diogenes - Ahh, Bob...you noticed about the cookies and cakes! My Mom never had a cup of coffee without a little cookie, but I'm just a coffee addict. I'm happy with coffee with or without the goodies, and I never add sugar to mine!

Hey, I wouldn't be above taking pay from coffee barons, but unfortunately, they haven't realized how valuable I am to them, yet. :)

diogenes 3 months ago

A well researched article, BUT!!

Coffee is no good for fatties according to you as it augments the attractiveness of donuts, pies, cakes, etc.

And many can't drink it black (Me), so they are getting a double whammy from sugar and coffeemate or milk products.

I have cut down to one good large cup in the morning, but ALONE (the coffee that is).

Are you being paid by the coffee barons!??

(Just kidding sweetie)

I have to agree with LadyLyell, that everything in moderation is okay! I would be a miserable person and quite impossible to be around (lol!) if I did not have my huge cup of black, unsweetened coffee in the morning. I just love the smell and taste of coffee. Wonderful and interesting topic! Pretty picture. What a beautiful and cheerful cup. Rated up and etc. Thanks for sharing!

ayliss08 = There are so many benefits to drinking coffee, but I learned to love coffee well before I learned of its benefits! Glad you found this hub useful and interesting!

Stephanie Henkel 3 months ago

BlissfulWriter - I drink my coffee with milk, no sweeteners or fancy stuff for me! But I have to admit that I don't drink coffee for its health benefits,I just drink coffee because I love it! Thanks for the read!

Wow, really informative hub! I love coffee, and glad to know so many benifits to drinking coffee. Thanks for sharing all these information! Interesting, and helpful! Voted up!

Yes, coffee is full of antioxidants and flavonoids. Just don't put sugar into it and it can be healthy.

creativelycc 3 months ago

So happy to hear all of the good news about coffee. You are right, there is nothing better than sipping on a cup of coffee on a cold day. And in Maine, we have many cold days. Now I won't feel guilty about drinking my coffee daily!

LadyLyell 3 months ago

Now that you have informed me that coffee improves the memory my kettle is on! Coffee here I come!

Seriously, I believe that moderation in all things is OK.

As for the aroma of coffee, it makes a house a home especially in the winter.

You chose a cosy topic, thanks!

I want to have this hub tattooed on my forhead. Well, maybe my back. Either way, I am a proud coffee lover and very happy to read about so many benefits. Makes me so happy I might just drink another cup!

One of the best things I learned after being diagnosed with cancer, is that it's OKAY to drink coffee!! I was so sure I was going to have to give it up, but I've read all the studies, and there is no link to cancer. Sweet!!

Nell Rose 3 months ago
